International innovation fora have been introduced by the BMBF Federal Ministry for Science and Education (Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung) as a successful new instrument to foster bilateral cooperation in the area of research and technological development.

Based on well established good relations to important partner countries in Latin America, a number of different thematic innovation fora have already been held in Brazil, Chile, Mexico, and Argentina in the past years.

This successful series was now continued with MykoBak09 in Colombia: From November 23–26, 2009, the University of Antioquia was hosting the first German-Colombian innovation forum which focussed on mycobacterial infectious diseases.
